Appleton, Wisconsin: Dozens of volunteers and members of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church decided to dedicate their weekends to collecting donations and setting up a food drive for families in need that have been affected by the global outbreak. It really is true what they say, the hardest times, often invoke the kindest gestures.
One Appleton Church’s Act of Kindness
It’s when times are tough that churches often find ways to be of service to the community. This Appleton church and its proactive members decided to provide food and personal care items to nearly 50 families in the area. The volunteers set up care packages that they later gave away to those in need through an improvised food drive. The families consisted of Family First Ministry members, Prince of Peace members, students from the Appleton East High School, and other nearby community members.
The Multiplied Effect of Helping Others
Carley Evers, a youth member of the church, and a volunteer, said the first food drive was such a success, they had even more donations for the second one. Alyssa Kislewski is another youth volunteer who loves how many people are responding and donating. She thinks it’s amazing that so many community members are taking their time and money to help those who may not have as much. This food drive has proven to be an incredibly important act of the community coming together. On one hand, it promotes giving back to those less fortunate, on the other, it educates young people to help their peers and make a lasting change in their lives.
Some volunteers even took things a step further and decided to put positive messages and artwork on the care boxes to encourage struggling families and put a smile on their faces. It’s still uncertain how long this food drive campaign will continue, but donations, both monetary and food, are still welcome at the church. After all, helping others isn’t important only during a pandemic but throughout the whole year. Wouldn’t you agree?
