Sometimes, elected officials and civilians come together to push for positive change and focus on issues that matter. However, this is not one of those times. At the beginning of last week, Alabama Rep Jeremy Gray put forth the Bill AL HB246. The purpose of the bill was to overturn a ban on yoga in public schools that has been in place since 1993.
Why Was Yoga Banned in Alabama Public Schools?
The reason yoga was banned in Alabama public schools since 1993 is that the government featured it would promote Hinduism. Many think, though, that yoga practice leads to Hinduism as much as swimming leads to being a dolphin. The arguments of the conservative Alabama groups backing hard against the bills is that if it passes, instructors will come into classrooms as young as kindergarten and bring the children through guided imagery. The latter is a spiritual exercise, and it is outside the children’s parents’ view.
Should Math Be Banned Too?
If we follow the logic of the bill’s opponents, Math should also be banned. After all, the number 666 is the number of the Devil, and if kids type the number 80085 into a calculator, it would look like the word BOOBS. From this perspective, math is demonic, indeed. And it also is taught outside the parents’ view.
Defending the Bill to Overturn the Ban on Yoga in Alabama Public Schools
In the bill’s defense, Jeremy Gray said that he hadn’t become a Hindu after doing yoga for ten years. In other words, he said that yoga wouldn’t destroy the fabric of America, especially if he simply wanted to allow public schools to authorize yoga as physical activity. Still, his opponents think it’s just too risky.
The bill was not passed. Yoga is still not allowed in Alabama public schools. America’s youth is saved from the dangers of flexibility. So, concerned citizens should not worry.
